Briitta Liisa textile print for Vallila Interior is named after my heroic great grandmother who as an infant was taken by reindeer sled from Kuusamo, Finland to Vadso, Norway. At 13, she emigrated by ship to America with her younger brother. She lost her hair, and her feet were so swollen she never took her shoes off… in fear that she would never get them on again. She ate her last piece of mouldy bread on the train from New York to Michigan.
The design features a timeless striped pattern, and an extra large lace motif along the edges of the fabric. The lace references older, handmade craft which is often passed along female lines from one generation to the next. Here the lace is repurposed on the textiles to merge history and craft with modern interiors.
