Offcuts, Reimagined Lamp Sculpture is a functional artwork made from stone and Corian manufacturing remnants that would have otherwise ended up as waste.
Salonen wanted to bring attention to the environmental impact that product designers make through their design decisions and material choices. The lamp uses granite and quartzite from salvaged stone slabs. Many of the materials were even fished out of a disposal bin, and the Corian table tops were left overs from an architectural fabrication process.
The design for Offcuts, Reimagined is modular. Stone rings are stacked in different ways to create sculptural effects. The design came from playing with the shapes. “I stacked them together, and love that it looks like sedimentary rock or layers of the earths core.” With this project Salonen has been very deliberate in avoiding adhesives or resins that bind everything together, as those methods do not typically support cradle to cradle. What happens when you want to discard a product and everything is fused together?
The stone and Corian rings in this design can be separated, and reconfigured to create a different aesthetic, for repair, or to repurpose the material again.
