Hand-cut paper pattern developed for the Chasing Hazel Foundation. Campaign for World Down Syndrome Day, March 21st.

CHASING HAZEL FOUNDATION

The project brief for the Chasing Hazel Foundation was to design a pair of mismatched socks for World Down Syndrome Day. It’s celebrated annually on the 21st day of the third month (March 21st) to represent the triplicate copy of the 21st chromosome. To bring awareness, many people support individuals with Trisomy 21 and their families by wearing fun mismatched socks.

Design inspiration is artwork by Elizabeth’s son Aksel – a 7-year old with Trisomy 21.

The inspiration behind the sock design is a very personal story. Elizabeth’s son Aksel is chromosomally enhanced – he has Trisomy 21 (aka Down syndrome). Aksel’s artwork, cut from paper (pictured above), was the starting point for the design. We turned his artwork into the black and white pattern featured on the sock, and made sure to keep the unique markings of imperfection made by little hands!

We paired his design with another pattern made from hand-cut paper shapes to create the mismatched pair.
