Annabell pendant lamp, designed for Kera Interior, is a lamp of classic beauty. It embodies elements of classic Finnish design: simplicity, functionalism, honesty. The combination of clear and white acrylic in two different shapes creates a tension in the simple object. The geometric lines of the outer bell contrast with the soft rounded shape of the inner dome. A translucent exterior reveals a glowing dome through the double material construction.
“Light and darkness are a big part of life in Finland, says Salonen. I’m inspired by light. When it’s cold and dark in the Finnish winter, you stay inside. Fire and light are the closest you get to the sun’s energy.”
Adding, “I was also inspired by the rounded, plastic shapes of the 1960s, which came about, in part, from the thermoforming process.” With Annabell, Salonen respects the traditions, materials and manufacturing processes of Finnish lamp design of the 60s, yet uses modernist shapes in a new way.
